A widespread bout of food poisoning has affected over 40 residential students at NIT Silchar, prompting urgent medical attention for several individuals. The severity of symptoms, including intense diarrhea and dehydration, led to the admission of numerous students for essential intravenous treatment.

In response to this alarming situation, the institution's management swiftly launched an investigation to identify the root cause. Samples were collected for meticulous microbial analysis, a crucial step in pinpointing the specific source and nature of the contamination.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, authorities engaged the expertise of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). FSSAI officials visited the campus to investigate the outbreak and assess food safety protocols.

Simultaneously, the Associate Dean of Students' Welfare issued a stern notice instructing students to refrain from consuming external fast or street foods. This directive, guided by the Health Center's Medical Officer, aimed to prevent further instances of food-related illnesses.

A faculty member disclosed that a majority of affected students had consumed meals from food outlets beyond the institute's gates, particularly in Fakirtilla. Stringent measures were promptly enforced, urging students to strictly adhere to mess-provided meals and prohibiting the consumption of external fast food options.

Comprehensive communication efforts within the student community warned against consuming Momos from the NIT point, highlighting the link to severe food poisoning cases. Many affected students were admitted to medical facilities, but since the notice on November 16, there has been a notable improvement in students' conditions.

This incident underscores the importance of food safety vigilance and highlights the risks associated with consuming unverified food sources. As investigations continue, the involvement of regulatory bodies is crucial, and the administration's dedication to ensuring student safety will determine preventive measures against the recurrence of health hazards within the campus. Despite attempts, no response was received from the Registrar of NIT Silchar for comments.
