AIDSO rallies against CUET cancellation in Silchar
A wave of protests erupted in Silchar on Wednesday as the All India Democratic Students' Organisation (AIDSO) vehemently opposed the cancellation of the Combined University Entrance Test (CUET).
Demonstrating their discontent, members of AIDSO staged a massive protest rally starting from the district office in silchar.
The protesters marched through the city's thoroughfares, chanting slogans demanding the reinstatement of CUET.
Later, they gathered in front of the district administration office, where they staged a vigorous demonstration to draw the attention of district officials and presented a memorandum to the Education Minister and other ministers.
Speaking to journalists, representatives of the student organization expressed concerns over the mandatory requirement for students seeking admission to undergraduate programs in colleges affiliated with Assam University to pass the CUET examination.
They highlighted that many students were unaware of the examination, resulting in a significant number of applicants not applying.
Furthermore, those who did apply were required to travel to various distant locations such as Aizawl, Shillong, Guwahati, Kokrajhar, Jorhat, and Dibrugarh to sit for the Bengali and Environmental Science exams.
The arbitrary decision by the National Testing Agency (NTA) has caused extreme distress among students, many of whom will be unable to attend the exams due to financial constraints.
In light of these challenges, the students demanded the cancellation of the CUET examination. They warned that failure to address their concerns through democratic means would compel them to engage in a larger democratic movement.
As tensions escalate, authorities are urged to address the grievances of the students promptly to prevent further unrest and disruption to the academic aspirations of many.
