Barak Democratic Front Clarifies Stand: No Dispute with Assamese Nation, Advocates Barak Separation Due to Continuous Deprivation

The Barak Democratic Front (BDF) sought to clear the air today following recent accusations of separatism and anti-Assamese sentiments in response to their demand for the separation of Barak. In a press conference at the Calcutta Press Club, a ten-member BDF delegation presented their reasons for advocating Barak's segregation from Assam. BDF Chief Convener Pradeep Dattaray firmly asserted that their cause was rooted in addressing the persistent deprivation and discrimination faced by Barak, regardless of which political party holds power in Dispur.

Addressing the allegations of being anti-Assamese, Dutta Roy emphasized the historical harmony and shared cultural ties between the Bengali and Assamese communities. He stressed that the BDF has never harbored any animosity towards the Assamese nation and has always promoted mutual cordiality and respect. Dattaray cited historical amalgamation, matrimonial relations, and cultural exchange as testaments to the strong bonds between the two communities.

However, Dutta Roy underlined the long-standing issues of political neglect and economic disparity faced by the Barak Valley, which have further intensified following the recent delimitation process. He pointed out that other regions, such as Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Arunachal Pradesh, had been separated from Assam in the past, and the demand for separate states or regions is not unique to Barak. Dattaray clarified that advocating Barak's separation was a response to these issues and not a call for divisiveness.

He also asserted that many prominent Assamese intellectuals in the Brahmaputra Valley had expressed support for Barak's separation, emphasizing that the two valleys could maintain positive relations even after Barak's potential separation.

Dutta Roy challenged the notion that there was no public support for the demand for a separate Barak and called for the government to withdraw Section 144, allowing gatherings and processions to demonstrate public sentiment. He expressed confidence in the future of Barak and the growing support from leaders and workers of national parties, even if some chose not to publicly endorse the cause at this time.
