Silchar, 08/09/23 - The Barak Democratic Front (BDF), a leading advocate for the separation of Barak Valley from Assam, has extended its gratitude to Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent comments regarding the potential separation of Barak. Dr. Sarma, addressing the media last Thursday, expressed his willingness to support Barak's separation from Assam if the residents of the valley collectively endorse such a move in the future.
In response to the Chief Minister's statement, Pradip Dutta Roy, Chief Convenor of the Barak Democratic Front, spoke to the media on Friday, emphasizing the valley's determination for autonomy. He said, "Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma must understand that we called for a Barak Bandh to protest the reduction of two assembly seats in this valley following the delimitation of Assam. This call received widespread support and was a resounding success. It clearly demonstrates that the people of Barak Valley are inclined towards supporting a separate Barak in the near future, ideally before the next assembly elections in Assam in 2026. We no longer wish to be represented by just 13 seats in the Assam assembly; instead, we aim for 60 seats in a separate state with our own elections."
The BDF's stance reflects the growing sentiment in Barak Valley for greater autonomy and self-governance, with an eye on achieving separate statehood in the coming years.
