Breaking: PM Modi approves establishment of IIM in Guwahati
In a significant stride towards bolstering higher education in Assam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sanctioned the establishment of a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) near Guwahati. This monumental decision follows a request by the Assam government in 2023 and represents a landmark achievement for the region.
The new IIM will position Guwahati among the elite cities in India that host premier institutes like an IIT, AIIMS, National Law University, and now an IIM. The announcement underscores the strategic vision of the Assam government, which over the past 18 months, successfully presented a compelling case to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the Education Ministry, offering premier land and logistical support for the initiative.
Mentored by IIM Ahmedabad, the forthcoming IIM in Guwahati is expected to set new benchmarks in management education. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), expressing his enthusiasm: "This will be a game changer for Assam, making the state an education hub in Eastern India and helping fulfill our economic aspirations."
Chief Minister Sarma also emphasized the potential for collaboration among these prestigious institutions and with industry, envisioning a multidisciplinary educational powerhouse in the state. "I envisage these premier institutes collaborating among themselves and with industry to unleash the power of multidisciplinary education," he stated.
The swift move from proposal to approval highlights the efficiency and commitment of the Double Engine government, a testament to the relentless advocacy by CM Sarma and his team in addressing this critical educational need for Assam.
The establishment of the new IIM is not just a step forward for Assam's educational landscape but also a significant boost to the state's socio-economic development, positioning it as a leading educational hub in Eastern India.
