Devastating Impact of Cyclone Remal

The recent floods in Assam, triggered by Cyclone Remal, have left 1,98,856 people affected across 386 villages in nine districts, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASMDA).

The Cachar District is the worst hit, with 1,02,246 people struggling with floodwaters. Other severely impacted areas include Karimganj District (36,959 people), Nagaon District (22,354 people), Hojai District (22,058 people), and Hailakandi District (14,308 people).

The Kopili River in Nagaon district is flowing above danger levels, worsening the situation.

Extensive Damage to Cropland and Infrastructure

The floods have damaged 3,238.8 hectares of cropland and partially damaged 885 houses in the affected districts

Infrastructure damage is significant, with roads and other structures damaged in 13 localities within Hailakandi and Nagaon districts.

Relief and rescue efforts are in full swing, with 110 relief camps and distribution centers set up in various districts, sheltering 43,049 people, including vulnerable groups such as women, pregnant women/lactating mothers, and children.

Ongoing Relief and Rescue Operations

The government and various agencies, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Fire and Emergency Services, are conducting rescue operations.

Approximately 220 people and three animals have been evacuated by boats in the affected districts.

Despite these efforts, one woman lost her life due to flash floods in Hailakandi district, and 2,34,535 domestic animals and poultry have been affected.

The Assam government is closely monitoring the situation, coordinating relief and rescue services, and urging affected residents to stay informed and cooperate with teams on the ground.
