Silchar, Cachar: In a dramatic turn of events, Cachar District Police detained several Congress workers participating in a march commemorating the anniversary of Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jor Yatra on Thursday.T

The incident unfolded as Congress officials from three districts gathered at Indira Bhavan to mark the occasion.

The day's program, organized by Cachar District Congress officials, included a padayatra attended by members from various levels of the party, including the district Congress, Youth Congress, and NSUI.

As the march progressed from the Congress office and reached Nazir Patti, it was abruptly halted by a police barricade, and participants were subsequently taken into custody.

The detained Congress workers were transported to Sadar police station, where they remained under detention for approximately two hours.

Following negotiations and discussions, they were eventually released from custody with a personal recognizance bond.

Reacting to the incident, Karimganj MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha expressed his displeasure, stating, "Nagpur is ruling Assam now; can't we enjoy our democratic rights, even if a chief minister is in the city?"

He raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the police intervention during the peaceful march.

Cachar District Congress President Abhijit Paul, too, voiced his concerns, suggesting that the Chief Minister of Assam had ordered the police to obstruct the march out of fear of opposition parties. The incident has raised questions about the freedom to hold political rallies and marches in the region, as tensions continue to simmer between political parties in Assam.
