Cachar scam: Three arrested, including engineer, for scaming youths in bike purchase scheme
In Cachar, three individuals, including an engineer, have been arrested for orchestrating an elaborate scam involving bike purchases. The mastermind, Jakir Ahmed Laskar, and his accomplices targeted financially struggling individuals by posing as company representatives offering job opportunities. They offered to assist the victims in purchasing bikes through a finance company, covering the down payment themselves. However, after completing the purchase and taking the bikes for a test ride, Jakir and his gang never returned, leaving the victims to face instalment payments demanded by the finance company. The scam defrauded at least 25 youths across the district over the past year.
The arrested individuals, Jakir Ahmed Laskar, Sahariya Hussain Laskar, and Shahid Ahmed Barbhuiya, targeted unemployed youths who did not own bikes and promised them job opportunities. Sahariya, who holds a diploma in engineering, was part of the gang that collected documents from the victims, opened accounts in their names, and facilitated fraudulent bike purchases. The police have recovered four bikes related to the scam and are continuing their search for other members of the suspected fraud gang. Following their arrest, the individuals have been taken into police custody for further interrogation with the court's permission.
The scam involved purchasing bikes in the victims' names and then selling them in other states. Although the four recovered bikes had not yet been sold, likely due to the ongoing flood situation which hampered immediate transportation, they were hidden at the residences of the gang members for later disposal. Despite these arrests, authorities continue to search for other members of the suspected fraud gang involved in this intricate scheme.
