Citizens protest against increased municipal taxes in Silchar

On Monday, the Progressive Citizens' Forum staged a protest in front of the Silchar Municipal Corporation office, demanding the withdrawal of increased water and other municipal taxes.

During the demonstration, speakers highlighted ongoing struggles with inadequate civic services in Silchar. Despite continuous efforts by the organization, they claim there has been no response from the government or administration.

The forum criticized the Silchar Municipal Corporation for unlawfully raising water charges, land taxes, and trade license fees, creating widespread discontent in the city. They argue that the municipality, being an autonomous body, cannot unilaterally increase taxes without an elected board's consent.

The group expressed frustration over the lack of positive action from government officials and the absence of any government response to their concerns. The public’s dissatisfaction has grown, with various community members, including business owners, joining the protest.

The forum raised questions about the poor quality of water being supplied and demanded a high-level investigation into the matter. They also called for immediate action on road repairs, improved drainage, permanent flood solutions, and other pressing issues.

A memorandum outlining their demands was submitted to the Silchar Municipal Corporation authorities. The forum has warned that if their demands are not met, they will continue their protests.
