On Tuesday, the Udharbond Block Congress held a protest at the APDCL office, demanding the removal of smart meters. The demonstration escalated into clashes with police when Congress members tried to burn effigies of the Chief Minister and Power Minister.
A large police presence prevented the burning. Congress leaders, including Silchar District Vice Presidents Seema Bhatta and Dibyajyoti Borua, Block Congress President Sandip Nandi, and state spokesperson Sanjeev Rai, criticized the government for excessive billing and financial hardships caused by smart meters, warning of a larger movement if their demands were not addressed.
The absence of several prominent Block Congress leaders, including former MLA Ajit Singh, sparked speculation among party workers.
