Cyclone Remal claims 6 lives, leaves trail of destruction in Bengal
Six people died as Cyclone Remal hit Bengal and northeastern states with heavy rain and high winds.
The cyclone made landfall between Sagar Island in Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh, causing widespread damage, uprooting trees, and disrupting power lines.
In Kolkata, three people died, while others were killed by falling trees and electrocution in Sundarbans and East Burdwan.
Kolkata received 189.5mm of rain in 24 hours, leading to severe waterlogging and power outages. Over 350 trees were uprooted, blocking roads and damaging vehicles.
Suburban train services and flights were disrupted, with 12 flights diverted at Kolkata airport.
Cyclone Remal also brought heavy rainfall to Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and Manipur, but no significant damage was reported.
Flights in the Northeast were cancelled, but Guwahati airport remained operational. Tripura saw minimal damage despite a high alert. Remal is expected to weaken into a deep depression by Monday night
