Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma takes oath: Becomes the 15th CM of Assam.

On 9th May 2021 Bharatiya Janata Party announced that Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will take the position.

Assam took a week to decide who will be taking the oath as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam and it chose Dr. Himanata Biswa Sarma. 

On 9th May 2021 Bharatiya Janata Party announced that Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma will take the position. 

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who has been a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly since 2001 has come a long way. He started his political career as a member of All Assam Students' Union. At the young age of 25, Himanta Biswa Sarma joined Indian National Congress. He contested from Jalukbari LAC in 1996, in which he lost. 

He worked his way up, in the year 2001 he won the constituency and he has been in the race ever since. His time with Congress ended earlier than he expected as in August 2015 he joined the BJP.  

The beloved MLA of Jalukbari submitted his nomination again in the Assembly elections in April 2016, but this time he fought on a BJP ticket and won by a margin of 85,935 votes. He was handed the health portfolio. 

During the first wave of the Covid pandemic, Assam witnessed his hard work. He worked day and night remarkably to safeguard the state from Coronavirus. 

His devotion to his position did not go unnoticed. A meeting held on 9th May 2021 at Dispur in the presence of central leaders B.L. Santosh, Baijayant Panda, Narendra Singh Tomar and Arun Singh, the outgoing chief minister Sonowal, maintaining the propriety of the process, proposed Himanta Biswa Sarma’s name which was backed by the MLAs, thus formalising Sarma’s elevation to the top post.
