Education Minister Pegu to provide contractual teacher and head teacher positions to schools with 100+ student
In a significant move, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, Assam’s Education Minister, declared on May 23 that schools boasting 100 or more students will soon introduce designated head teacher positions. This strategic decision aims to support school management and raise better educational outcomes across the state.
Moreover, the government plans to regularize the employment status of contractual teachers, offering them greater job stability.
Dr. Pegu affirmed, “The implementation will commence from this academic year. With the academic session already underway since April 1, 2024, and given our engagement with the elections, the paperwork has initiated and is slated for completion within this year.
The process of regularizing contractual teacher positions will also be expedited during this academic session.” He highlighted that while a majority of teachers have opted for regularization, those who prefer contractual roles can retain their current status.
Earlier directives from the Samagra Shiksha, Assam (SSA), mandated contractual and state pool teachers to make a definitive choice regarding regularization or continuation as contractual teachers by January 30, 2024.
This policy ensures transparency regarding employment status and associated benefits, raiseing clarity among teachers.
Under the new framework, teachers can elect to embrace regularization, entailing initial scale pay advantages from the proposed date of appointment, or persist as contractual teachers, preserving existing financial perks and service terms.
This initiative is poised to fortify job security for teachers and elevate the overall educational landscape in Assam.
