Facebook Instagram and Whatsapp global outage, Internal Server Error or a Massive Cyber Attack?

On 4th october Monday, people were globally hit by the massive outage of Facebook, instagram and whatsapp. It was the largest outage ever seen since 2019. The outage started just before noon and took nearly six hours before it was resolved. 

This outage impacted a millions of users wordwide, specially small businesses and creators who rely on these services for their income.

Facebook said late on Monday that it has been working to restore access to its services by issuing an explanation for the outage, saying that it was due to a configuration issue. The company apologised and thanked its users for bearing with it but did not say what might have caused the outage, which began around 8:45pm.

On Twitter, Facebook communications executive Andy Stone says, “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible, and we apologize for any inconvenience.” 

Not only the users but the outage has broken nearly all of the internal systems employees use to communicate and work. Stamos added, Facebook's outage appears to be caused by DNS; however that's a just symptom of the problem.' Several internet infrastructure experts told Wired that the likeliest answer was a misconfiguration on Facebook's part. 'It appears that Facebook has done something to their routers, the ones that connect the Facebook network to the rest of the internet,' John Graham-Cumming, CTO of internet infrastructure company Cloudflare, said.
