During a recent inspection, former MLA and current Congress leader Aminul Haque Laskar remarked that the Betukandi embankment in Silchar has turned into a "gold mine."

Despite the severe floods of 2022, there has been no progress in the rehabilitation of the greater Betukandi area.

On Friday, Laskar visited the area to assess the situation and meet with affected residents. He criticized the departmental authorities and the current government for failing to repair the embankment over the past year.

He highlighted that, on May 28, 2024, Silchar experienced flooding again, and the authorities struggled to close the sluice gate despite emergency efforts.

Questions were raised about the unscientific construction of the sluice gate, which required machines to operate the shutters just a year after its construction.

Laskar also pointed out that the residents of Barakpur, Berenga, and Madhurband are suffering due to the dire condition of the embankment.

Although the water level of the Barak River has receded below the danger mark, the Mahisha Beel remains flooded, causing significant daily hardships for the locals.

He criticized the government and departmental authorities for their lack of attention, stating that while some residents remain submerged, officials are profiting from the situation.

Laskar's sharp remarks underscore the urgent need for effective flood management and infrastructure improvements in the Betukandi area to alleviate the suffering of the local population.
