Four ULFA-I cadres surrender in Guwahati's Assam Police headquater
In a significant development, four cadres of the United Liberation Front of Asom- Independent (ULFA-I) surrendered at the Assam Police Headquarters in Guwahati on Wednesday. The surrender took place in the presence of Assam Director General of Police GP Singh, Special DGP Harmeet Singh, and other high-ranking police officials.
The surrendered cadres were identified as self-styled captain Nayan Patmout alias Bikram Asom, self-styled lieutenant Dipak Hatibaruah alias Dibya Asom, Montu Moran, and Polash Moran alias Gopal Asom.
Addressing the media at Assam Police Headquarters, DGP GP Singh expressed hope that these four ULFA-I cadres returning to the mainstream would collaborate with the people of the state for its comprehensive development.
Providing details about the surrender, Additional Director General of Police Hiren Nath revealed that two of the surrendered cadres had handed over two hand grenades, an Austrian-made pistol, and 25 rounds of live bullets to the police.
ADGP Nath further disclosed that a total of 16 cadres have been arrested in encounters with Para Military forces and the police, and one cadre has been killed.
Responding to questions about rehabilitation efforts, DGP Singh stated that the primary goal is to empower the surrendered cadres to become self-reliant.
Recently, the Assam Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam Police, and the Army initiated a unique program to enhance peace and tranquility. As part of this initiative, families of ULFA cadres are being invited to Army, CAPF camps, and Police Stations for trust-building, aiming to reintegrate their children into mainstream society.
In response, family members of misguided youths are making heartfelt appeals through social media to ULFA-I Chief Paresh Baruah to encourage their sons and daughters to return home.
Sharing clips on the microblogging site X, Assam DGP GP Singh highlighted the poignant appeal of Bipin Saikia, father of ULFA cadre Monjit Saikia alias Nobojit Saikia in Golaghat. Saikia earnestly appealed to ULFA-I Chief Paresh Baruah to reunite him with his son, emphasizing the health issues faced by Monjit's ailing mother and himself. The emotional plea reflects the ongoing efforts to bring former ULFA cadres back to their families and communities.
