Guwahati Engineer's residence raided: Rs 80 lakh cash seized in corruption scandal

In a significant operation by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption in Guwahati, a senior engineer was apprehended today after being caught red-handed accepting a bribe.

This led to subsequent searches at his residence in Hengrabari, resulting in the seizure of assets totaling around Rs 80 lakhs, with Rs 79,87,500 recovered in cash. The accused, identified as Jayanta Goswami, an executive engineer at the Public Health Engineering Department in North Lakhimpur Circle, was found guilty of demanding a bribe of Rs 20,000 from a complainant for expediting payment bill clearances.

Earlier today, investigative efforts by the anti-corruption agency led to Goswami's arrest at his workplace in Guwahati. The official X handle of the directorate confirmed Goswami's involvement in illicit activity, highlighting his position within the engineering department.

 The complainant's cooperation with authorities played a pivotal role, as they reported Goswami's solicitation of bribes in exchange for facilitating payment processes, prompting the agency's swift action in apprehending the corrupt official.
