Historic move by Guwahati University: Authority implements menstrual leave for female students
In a significant move towards promoting menstrual health and acknowledging its impact on overall well-being, Gauhati University and its affiliated colleges have introduced menstrual leave for female students. The decision, announced by the Vice Chancellor, aims to address the unique challenges faced by women during their menstrual cycles and aligns with directives from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Women and Child Development.
Effective immediately, the university has granted a 2 percent relaxation in the minimum class attendance requirement for female students. This means that women students are entitled to a menstrual leave provision, allowing a 2 percent relaxation in the minimum class attendance required to sit for semester examinations. To be eligible for examinations, female students must maintain a minimum class attendance of 73 percent.
The progressive policy recognizes menstrual health as an integral aspect of overall well-being, acknowledging its impact on various facets of life including mobility, work participation, access to education, dignity, and freedom. Gauhati University, established in 1948, takes a forward-thinking approach in addressing the needs of its female students and promoting inclusivity in higher education.
This initiative reflects the university's commitment to fostering a supportive and understanding academic environment, ensuring that female students can manage their well-being effectively while pursuing their education.
