India stood firmly alongside a majority of nations in endorsing a draft resolution at the United Nations General Assembly, advocating for Palestine's full membership in the UN. This resolution, championed by the United Arab Emirates on behalf of the Arab Group, garnered significant support with a favorable vote of 143-9, despite facing opposition from the United States, which wielded its veto power in support of Israel.

The resolution underscored Palestine's fulfillment of the criteria outlined in Article 4 of the UN Charter and urged the Security Council to reconsider Palestine's membership application favorably.

India's longstanding commitment to Palestinian sovereignty was evident in its historical support, including being the first non-Arab state to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization in 1974 and one of the earliest backers of the State of Palestine in 1988.

India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj, expressed optimism despite previous setbacks, hoping for eventual success in Palestine's membership bid. The resolution also heralded forthcoming enhanced participation rights for Palestine, commencing from the 79th General Assembly session, including representation among member states and eligibility for officer positions in General Assembly committees.

Despite currently holding the status of a non-member observer state at the UN, which restricts voting rights on resolutions, Palestine's aspirations for full membership continue to garner global attention and support.

This status, granted in 2012 alongside the Holy See, marks a significant step in Palestine's diplomatic journey within the international community, with hopes set on further progress towards full recognition and participation in UN affairs.
