India Takes Neutral Stand in UNSC Meeting Over Israel-Palestine Conflict, Upsets the Domestic Inclination.
The Indian population was largely divided over the Israel-Palestine conflict in the last few days. A large section of people from India inclined in support of the Israeli government. Hashtags continued to trend in support and opposition to Israel in India, with a bigger part in support of the Jews Nation.
In the United Nations Security Council meeting held yesterday, India took a relatively neutral stand by condemning all forms of violence. The Indian Ambassador T.S Tirumurti said, "India condemns the rockets fired from Palestine, targetting the civilians in Israel and the retaliatory action from Israel which caused many deaths in Palestine, including women and children." Indian Ambassador also asked the two sides to deescalate and to sit for dialogues. The Indian Ambassador also drew the context of the Sufi shrine in Jerusalem and the Indians emotional connection to that. However, the Indian Ambassador ended his statement by saying, "India reiterates support to just Palestinian cause & commitment to a 2-State solution."
The Indian statement rounded more towards Palestine's cause and the Islamic history of Jerusalem. The official statement of India came as a disappointment for the pro-BJP social media handles, who have been battling in support of Israel for the last so many days. Some Twitter handles even tweeted that it was wrong of India to ask Israel to deescalate and begin a peace process with a terrorist organisation (Hamas) that has been targetting its citizens. The Twitter handles termed it as the failure of the Modi government to take strong stands, even when the Prime Minister himself preaches about zero tolerance towards terrorism in the world forums.
