Infant dies of Swine Flu at SMCH; two active cases, one discharged
The Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) has tragically recorded another infant death due to H1N1 influenza, marking the second such fatality at the facility. Arman Hussain Laskar, a four-month-old from Uttarkrishnapur, succumbed to the virus after being admitted with influenza-like symptoms on April 12.
Despite testing positive for H1N1 and receiving treatment, he passed away on May 7. The Joint Director of Health, Dr. Ashutosh Barman, emphasized the importance of vigilance among parents, urging them to promptly report any signs of influenza or common cold in infants.
Currently, SMCH is treating two H1N1 patients, while one has recovered and been discharged. Dr. Barman stressed the necessity for parents to remain vigilant, citing the referral of another patient from Hailakandi district.
Despite the lack of clarity regarding the infection's source, health officials continue to investigate. Dr. Barman reassured the public that while the origin of the H1N1 strain remains unknown, there is no cause for panic, advocating for the adoption of precautionary measures similar to those for COVID-19.
Health experts in the district echoed Dr. Barman's sentiment, emphasizing the importance of caution without inciting alarm. They reiterated the need for parents to closely monitor their infants for any signs of influenza-like illness and to promptly seek medical attention if symptoms arise. While investigations into the source of the H1N1 infection persist, the community is encouraged to remain calm and adhere to preventive measures to mitigate the spread of the virus.
