In India, there are seven types of number plates and each colour of the number plate symbolizes different meanings. We basically get a sight of white number plates all around. A white number plate with black license number indicates the car of a common citizen of the nation. It is to be noted that the vehicle of the Prime Minister of India also has white number plate.

We must know that the yellow number plate with black license number is used for taxis and is commonly used for commercial purposes.

Red colour plate with our National Symbol represents the vehicle of the President and Governors of various states. In such a number plate, the license number is replaced by the Indian Emblem.

It is worth mentioning here that if there is a red plate but with white letters, it is a temporary number plate for a new vehicle.

A blue colour number plate with white letters indicates that the vehicle is used by foreign diplomats residing in our country. These number plates represents diplomat's country code instead of state's code.

Green colour number plates with white letters designates electric vehicles. For example, Mahindra e20 and Tata tigor electric and road-legal electric buses.

The number plate with upward-pointing arrow in the beginning of the license number shows that the vehicles are registered under ministry of defence.

Black plate with yellow number on it represents self-driving rented cars.Such plates can be seen on the vehicles that can be utilised for commercial purpose without commercial driving permit.

Now-a-days, a new number plate has also started to be issued with the BH code. These plates are mainly for the government employees, so that , after being posted to a new place, the employees do not have to transfer the vehicle.
