Land dispute in Kathigorah takes violent turn: Elderly woman tortured and robbed by neighbors on way home; seeks justice amid police silence
A land dispute takes a violent turn, leaving victim and son in fear for their lives.
Khushbeda Begum Barabhooiya, an elderly resident of Kathigorah Dudhpur 1st Block, is pleading for justice after enduring a brutal assault by her neighbors on her way home from Silchar. The incident, which occurred on November 25, involved unidentified miscreants who not only physically attacked her but also snatched away her bag containing valuable documents and cash.
Speaking to the media, Khushbeda Begum recounted the harrowing experience, revealing that the attack was linked to an ongoing land dispute that has been pending in court for an extended period. Allegedly, local individuals have resorted to force in an attempt to seize the disputed land, leading to two years of continuous harassment and torture endured by Khushbeda Begum and her son, Hilaj Uddin Barabhooiya.
Despite filing a case with the Kathigorah Police Station regarding the matter, the elderly victim and her son feel abandoned by the police, claiming that law enforcement is playing a mysterious and silent role in the investigation. The prolonged land dispute has created a perilous environment for Khushbeda and Hilaj, compelling them to seek shelter elsewhere out of fear for their lives.
In a desperate bid for justice, Khushbeda Begum Mahim Uddin, alongside a group of concerned citizens, including Barabhuiya, Ibrahim Ali, Badrul Islam Chowdhury, Bilal Hussain Chowdhury, Lucky Begum Lashkar, Lala Ban Bibi Chowdhury, Rashida Begum Chowdhury, and Chamad Hussain, has filed a case at the Kathigorah police station, accusing the culprits of the violent attack.
The victims are urging the administration to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, hoping for a resolution that will bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure the safety of Khushbeda Begum and her son. The community is now watching closely as the authorities are called upon to address the escalating violence arising from the longstanding land dispute.
