Manipur Govt to empower its women by launching 'Jal Diwali initiative
In a pioneering initiative, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has launched "Jal Diwali" under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) and the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM). Focused on the theme "Water for Women, Women for Water," this campaign, inaugurated in Imphal, is designed to empower women with vital knowledge about water management.
As part of this groundbreaking effort, members of women's Self Help Groups (SHGs) embarked on enlightening tours of Water Treatment Plants (WTP). These visits offered them firsthand insights into the operations of these plants and the intricate processes involved in ensuring a clean and safe water supply to urban areas.
The exposure visits, conducted on Thursday, centered around the Water Treatment Plants at Chingkheiching and Porompat in Imphal East District. The initiative was a collaborative effort led by the State Mission Director of AMRUT in Manipur and the State Mission Director of Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana DAY-NULM, in partnership with the Public Health Engineering Department of Manipur. A significant number of women from diverse SHGs actively participated in these informative excursions.
The primary goal of this initiative is to raise awareness among women about the prudent use of water. The Minister emphasized the increased challenges of water scarcity due to climate change, underscoring the need to understand effective water management practices.
Recognizing the pivotal role women play in household water management, empowering them with knowledge about water treatment plant operations and machinery types will facilitate sensible and efficient water resource use. "Jal Diwali" is poised to make a significant impact by equipping women with the understanding and tools to contribute to responsible water management practices at the grassroots level.
