The 'S Presso' model from Maruti has allegedly become the vehicle of choice for illegal Burmese betel nut smugglers. Despite daily smuggling activities involving hundreds of small cars loaded with Burmese betel nuts under the cover of illegal black glass, the police have reportedly taken no significant action to curb these activities.
The accident unfolded at Kalain Bhatgram on the notorious smuggling route, with the driver fleeing the scene immediately after the crash. Seizing the opportunity, a group of miscreants attempted to steal betel nuts from the accident-stricken vehicle. However, when two local youths intervened to prevent the robbery, they were brutally assaulted, leading to one of them sustaining serious injuries.
Upon hearing the distressing commotion, local residents rushed to the scene, rescuing the injured youth and promptly sending him to the hospital. Incensed by the incident, an agitated crowd blocked National Highway No. 6 in protest.
