Meet Somava Dutta, the artist who changed the scenario of Silchar civil hospital

Witnessing a new experience in our Silchar Civil Hospital even in the tragic situation is something we never expect. But Silchar Civil Hospital has been renovated by a lady is the most fascinating news and a step towards new change and an example for entire Barak valley.

When we hear the name of a hospital the first thing comes to almost everyone’s mind is a room with white wall holding a big red cross and green curtains, obnoxious smell, some patients, doctors, nurses and the other health workers roaming here and there.

But this time a lady has taken the initiative to change this prevalent orthodoxy of thinking and the environment of the hospital with her creativity. She is none other than Dr. Somava Dutta, a native of Silchar. She had completed her Bachelors, Masters, Ph.d from Viswa-Bharati university and presently associated with TTE college silchar as a guest lecturer and also well known as freelance artist in the Barak valley.

She has set an example of her artistry. She has decorated the hospital with her creative mind and work. She has got the opportunity to work in silchar civil hospital under the project of renovation of the word NRC . She was assigned under the painting section.

Though her specialization is in textile designing but she has got the opportunity to learn various techniques and mediums from various departments of Viswa-Bharati University Shantiniketan. So, it was not so difficult for her to handle these kind of work. She took the challenge and full filled it.

When she was working at the civil hospital she had something in the mind that there are patients of different ages. From infants to old age peoples. So, she has decided to create something innovative which will facilitate the patients to be happy in such critical situation. From alphabets on the wall to making pictures of flowers, fruits, sceneries, cartoon characters and images including important messages on the wall as provided by the hospital authority.

She thought that these pictures will spread positivity to the patients and these paintings would be life saving for the dying patients also. Because she believes, “ If the mind is happy then the body is happy, if the mind is good the body is good.”

Exorcist devil people who actually discouraged her into not doing any such work but her confidence seemed no boundaries. Her effort and ideas reflected in the use of her paint-brush. She has done the work alone & completed the work within 5 days. In this 5 days she worked from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. because the date of inauguration of the renovated hospital was knocking on the door. And she successfully completed her task and ended up becoming a huge example for the other hospitals who are currently not in a very favourable position.

An artist's being an artist is through the manifestation of his /her talent, artistry. A woman has her own action skills, her own thinking in action ability she can prove herself. Somava Dutta's thoughts and attempts caught our eye. She deserves the applause and praise for this work. Women are not only experienced in decorating the house, they can establish themselves in their own way in both cases inside and outside the house. Woman like Somava Dutta deserves every bit of attention and all the aspiring artists should take huge inspiration from this wonderful woman.
