A recent study conducted by Banaras Hindu University has revealed that nearly one-third of individuals who received Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin vaccine experienced significant side effects and disorders. The adverse effects, termed "adverse events of special interest" (AESI), encompass respiratory tract infections, nervous system disorders, and even strokes.

The study found that around 50% of participants reported infections during the follow-up period, predominantly viral upper respiratory tract infections. Additionally, serious AESI, including strokes and Guillain-Barré syndrome, were reported in 1% of the participants.

The research, which included 926 participants—635 adolescents and 291 adults—was conducted between January 2022 and August 2023, with health follow-ups carried out one year post-vaccination. Among adolescents, the most common disorders following vaccination were new skin and subcutaneous disorders, general disorders, and nervous system disorders.

Published in the journal Springer Nature, this study underscores the necessity for continuous monitoring of vaccine effects. The findings come shortly after AstraZeneca acknowledged that its Covishield vaccine could cause rare side effects such as blood clotting and decreased platelet counts.
