Racism at the Silicon Valley of India; several videos go viral as auto drivers harass tourists in Bangaluru
In recent years, the demand for ride- hailing services has increased significantly. However, with the increase in the number of drivers, there has also been an increase in the incidents of misconduct by autodrivers towards their counterparts in the industry.
Recently, a shocking incident came to light when an autodriver ,whose name is yet to be disclosed, smashed the helmet of a Rapido driver from Northeast India and hurled racial slurs at him.The incident has once again highlighted the issue of racism and safety in the transportation industry, especially for drivers who belong to marginalized communities.
According to the Rapido driver, he was waiting at a signal in central Bangalore when the autodriver ,who was coming from the opposite direction, hit his helmet with his hand .The autodriver then began abusing the Rapido driver in Kanada and also used racist slurs, which were directed towards his ethnicity.
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many people expressing their anger and disgust over the autodrivers' behavior. The Rapido driver has also filed a case with the local police, who have initiated an investigation into the matter.
It is not the first time that an incident like this has happened. Autodrivers have been known to harass and discriminate against other drivers in the industry, particularly those from Northeast India who are often subjected to racial abuse. Furthermore, the government needs to take necessary steps to curb racism and ensure that drivers from marginalized communiti are not subjected to any form of harassment or discrimination at the workplace.
