May 21, 2024: Frustrated residents of Ward 26 have issued a three-day ultimatum to the Public Works Department (PWD) to resolve issues and restart the stalled drainage and footpath construction work on Vivekananda Road.
The project, which has been languishing for four years, has seen no significant progress, much to the ire of the local community.
Pradip Nath, speaking on behalf of the residents, addressed journalists on Tuesday to highlight the ongoing problems. He explained that during the initial phase of the drainage work, two old culverts were removed.
However, a large section of the drain near Lane 7 has been left open under the pretext of constructing a new culvert, raising concerns about potential flooding in the extensive area of Ward 25.
Nath emphasized that both the PWD and certain influential individuals within Ward 25 are to blame for the stagnation of the project.
The open section of the drain poses a significant risk of waterlogging, especially with the upcoming monsoon season.
In a clear display of unity and determination, the residents have demanded the PWD provide a concrete plan and commence work within three days.
If their demands are not met by May 25, they have vowed to block Vivekananda Road, disrupting traffic and drawing wider attention to their plight.
"The situation is dire, and the exposed sections of the drain must be covered to prevent further issues," Nath stated.
"The PWD must clarify the status and timeline of the project within the next three days, or we will be left with no choice but to take to the streets."
The delay in completing the drainage work has not only disrupted daily life but also posed significant health hazards to the residents due to stagnant water and incomplete infrastructure.
The community's patience has worn thin, and their call for action reflects the urgent need for effective and timely intervention by the authorities.
As the deadline approaches, the residents of Ward 26 remain steadfast in their demands. The next few days will be crucial in determining whether the PWD will address the grievances and resume work, or if the residents will proceed with their planned road blockade.
The situation underscores the need for better project management and accountability in public infrastructure projects.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as the deadline looms and tensions rise in the Vivekananda Road area.
