Severe Cyclone Remal to hit West Bengal and Bangladesh, Kolkata airport suspends operations: Assam and other Northeastern states brace for heavy rainfall and strong winds
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe warning for Cyclone Remal, expected to hit West Bengal on Sunday, May 26. Initially detected as a low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal on May 22, it has now intensified into a significant depression and is currently situated in the central Bay of Bengal.
The IMD forecasts that this system will develop into a cyclone, affecting coastal regions of Bangladesh and West Bengal with extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds.
In addition to West Bengal, other northeastern states, including Tripura, Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur, are expected to experience heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Tripura's regional meteorological center has also warned of adverse weather conditions beginning on May 26. The impending cyclone has led to a 21-hour suspension of flight operations at Kolkata airport, causing significant inconvenience for passengers.
Many passengers reported that airlines failed to inform them about flight cancellations through email or registered phone numbers. As a result, some passengers are demanding compensation for hotel costs and food allowances due to the lack of timely communication from the airlines.
