Silchar lawyer Soumen Chowdhury and wife pledge eye donation to raise awareness
Prominent Silchar lawyer Soumen Chowdhury and his wife Barnali Chowdhury, residents of Shiv Colony, pledged to donate their eyes after death during a home ceremony on their 17th wedding anniversary last Wednesday.
Biswaraj Chakraborty, vice president of Saksham Southern Assam branch and coordinator of the Corneal Blindness Mukt Bharat Abhiyan of South Assam Prant, facilitated the pledge.
Highlighting the need for eye donation awareness, Chakraborty mentioned that 40 to 50 thousand people in India suffer from corneal blindness annually, yet only about 25 thousand corneas are available.
He stressed the importance of timely cornea removal and transplantation, which must occur within six and seventy-two hours of death, respectively.
Due to the efforts of Saksham, an eye bank has been established at Silchar Medical College, and approximately 20 people from the area have regained sight through cornea transplants.
In the discussion, Soumen and Barnali Chowdhury expressed their commitment to supporting the eye donation movement in the future. The event saw the presence of several individuals, including Mounika Chowdhury, Sayantika Chowdhury, Bansree Chakraborty, Tripti Chakraborty, Baibhav Chakraborty, Vithika Chakraborty, Trishita Bhattacharjee, Sudipta Chowdhury, Kamalaksha Chakraborty, and Biswajyoti Chowdhury.
Biswaraj Chakraborty expressed sincere gratitude to the couple for their noble gesture on behalf of the Saksham family.
