Silchar residents urge 4-lane road from Kathal Point to Medical College

In a recent development, residents of the large Meherpur area have called for the construction of a four-lane road from Kathal Point to Silchar Medical College to address traffic issues. This demand was highlighted during a public meeting held on Saturday.

On the same day, Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty laid the foundation stone for roadwork on Cancer Hospital Road under the Chief Minister's Urban Pocket Road Construction Project for the 2024-25 fiscal year. An amount of ₹2,95,08,000 has been allocated for the construction of drains and roads at the Cachar Cancer Hospital.

During the public meeting, MLA Chakraborty emphasized that the new roadwork would ease patient access to the hospital and improve vehicle entry, while also alleviating waterlogging issues. He criticized the Congress party for neglecting road and drain construction projects since independence, which he claims has left people suffering.

Chakraborty assured that despite challenges, the current government is committed to resolving long-standing issues and accelerating development. He highlighted that ₹48 crore has been allocated for road improvements in Silchar city under the Chief Minister’s Urban Pocket Road Construction Project for the 2023-24 fiscal year. Proposals for constructing two additional roads have been submitted to the Chief Minister, with tenders expected to be finalized by the end of the month and work scheduled to commence in September.

Local residents also raised their concerns about traffic congestion in Meherpur and requested the construction of a four-lane road from Kathal Point to Silchar Medical College. They expressed their support for the MLA and their willingness to assist in expediting the city's development.
