Silchar's new green thumb: 3 crore trees to save Assam—If we can find the space!
The Silchar Divisional Forest Office recently hosted the launch of the "Amrit Vriksha Movement" program, an ambitious tree-planting initiative under the management of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The program, which began on Wednesday, commenced with the distribution of saplings to students from various Self-Help Groups (SAJGs) and schools, symbolizing the start of this significant environmental campaign.
Speakers at the event highlighted the goals of the Amrit Vriksha Movement, emphasizing that it aims to plant 1.12 lakh trees in the Cachar district by August 15. Additionally, the initiative plans to achieve a statewide target of planting 3 crore trees. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called upon every resident of Assam to plant a tree in their mother's name, fostering a personal and emotional connection to the cause of environmental conservation.
The launch event saw the presence of several notable dignitaries, including Silchar MLA Dipayan Chakraborty, Udharbond MLA Mihir Kanti Som, Lakshmipur MLA Kaushik Rai, District Collector Rohan Kumar Jha, SP Numar Mahanta, DFO Bijoy Pal, and other officials from the forest department. Their attendance underscored the importance and high level of support for the initiative.
The Amrit Vriksha Movement is a testament to Assam's commitment to enhancing its green cover and promoting a sustainable environment. By involving students, local communities, and government officials, the program aims to create a lasting impact on the state's ecological health and set an example for other regions to follow.
