Syria-Turkey like Earthquake could hit this area of India soon: Warns NGRI

The world got shook when when earthquake of 6.4 magnitude hit Syria and Turkey again on Tuesday, which led to major destruction. The death toll of the earthquake has now crossed 50,000, with many people still believed to be trapped.

After this heart breaking devastation, many experts believe that a similar magnitude of earthquake can hit Uttarakhand state of India.

The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) said that the Himalayan region is the one which would be affected the most. The experts said that the earthquake could hit Himachal Pradesh which will have an impact on Uttarakhand and Nepal. 

"Earth’s surface comprises various plates that are constantly in motion. The Indian plate is moving about 5 cm per year, leading to accumulation of stress along the Himalayas increasing the possibility of a greater earthquake.", said Dr N Purnachandra Rao, Chief Scientist,NGRI while talking to the media. 

The expert said, “We have a strong network of 18 seismograph stations in Uttarakhand. The region referred to as the seismic gap between Himachal & western part of Nepal incl Uttarakhand is prone to earthquakes that might occur at any time.”
