Tea worker electrocuted in Cachar, sparks local protests over negligence

A tragic incident at Lakhipur Lediyachara tea estate in Cachar claimed the life of a tea worker, Ramshankar Koiry, who was electrocuted after coming into contact with a live wire near his home.

The wire had been hanging dangerously low, just 4 feet above the ground, and despite repeated reports to the electricity department, no action had been taken to address the hazard.

The situation quickly escalated when police arrived to recover the body, as agitated locals blocked their efforts, accusing the electricity department of negligence. They demanded immediate compensation for the worker's family, holding the department responsible for the preventable death. The tense standoff highlighted the community's frustration with the authorities' inaction, which they believe directly contributed to the tragedy.

In response to the mounting pressure, officials from the electricity department arrived at the scene and assured the locals of financial compensation for the bereaved family. Following this promise, the locals allowed the police to take the body for a post-mortem examination, bringing a temporary resolution to the tense situation.
