Caves were the dwellings of our early ancestors, one of the first material testaments of human civilizations. Caves are natural wonders which carry tales in their deep realms. Visiting a cave is always a thrilling and mysterious experience. Ajanta and Ellora Caves and the Elephanta Island Caves are the most famous caves in India . However, there are many lesser known caves in our country . North-East is not a very well-explored region of our country. Unlike North, people don’t really know about it’s rich and diverse history. Caves make a significant contribution to tourist attractions in the region. There are many popular caves that are located in North-East India. Two of the most famous caves are the Tharon Cave in Manipur and the Mawsmai Cave in Meghalaya. However, there is another one of which people are not aware. It’s the Pukzing Cave, situated in Mizoram.

The Pukzing Cave is the biggest cave in the state of Mizoram that stretches to the length of 25 meters.Wow ! That’s massive. Literally, ‘the cave of shouting stone', the cave is situated in the village of Pukzing that lies close to Marpara in the Aizawl district of Mizoram , along the Western fringes of the Himalayas. It’s located in the North-West of the capital city and is a spacious wonder having three chambers of about 4 square kms each connected with a narrow passage. The adventure seekers often visit the cave not only for it’s dimensions , but also for the alluring natural carvings that bedeck the cave.

The Pukzing Cave of Mizoram bears a legend that the cave was carved out by Mualzavata who was believed to be the strongest man of the state. And indeed! Because the folks believe that he made this with the help of a HAIRPIN!!! That would make a fine Marvel Superhero movie. The name of Mualzavata in itself is self explanatory as it means the person who could clear the forested regions of a hundred ranges in a single day.

Another legend goes that in the olden days, the villagers used to hear evil spirits shouting inside the caves. It is also said that somewhere near this cave that Mualzavata hid the magical drum he took away from a troop of monkeys after seeing them conjure fruits by beating it.

Like this one many gems are hidden in the annals of North-East’s history, some myth, some truth, like the history of the whole world We just need to dive right in, or else they will remain in the depths of these massive caves.

Till then, pack your bags and get ready for a trip to the magnanimous Pukzing Cave.
