This year’s general election is the darkest election in India’s history: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee has declared the current general election as the darkest in India's history, warning that there may not be any more elections if Narendra Modi is re-elected as Prime Minister. Speaking at a rally in Silchar, Assam, Banerjee criticized the perceived bias of government agencies towards the BJP, accusing them of working exclusively for the ruling party. Despite facing challenges in West Bengal, where the Congress and Left parties have allied with the BJP, Banerjee affirmed her commitment to leading a strong opposition against the BJP-led government.

This marked Banerjee's inaugural campaign appearance in Assam since assuming office as West Bengal chief minister. She cited the demise of former Union minister and Congress leader Santosh Mohan Dev as the reason for her prior absence from Assam's political landscape. The Trinamool Congress is contesting in four out of 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam in this election cycle, with Banerjee personally campaigning for the party's candidate in Silchar. Looking ahead, Banerjee announced plans for the TMC to contest in all seats during the 2026 assembly elections in Assam, pledging to repeal the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and resist the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) if victorious.
