Three Assam MPs in contention for spots in Modi's new cabinet
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to be sworn in on June 9, with an impressive turnout of over 8,000 dignitaries, including international leaders like Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and Maldives President Mohamed Ruizzi. The event at Rashtrapati Bhawan will witness speculation around the formation of Modi's new cabinet, particularly from Assam.
In Assam, speculation is rife that besides Sarbananda Sonowal, current Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, another MP from the state might join the new NDA cabinet.
BJP MPs Dilip Saikia, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, and Parimal Suklabaidya are rumored to be potential additions. Saikia, Tasa, and Suklabaidya have notable political backgrounds and have contributed significantly to the BJP's influence in Assam.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, a significant cabinet reshuffle is anticipated, especially with the inclusion of new alliance partners like Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United) and Chandrababu Naidu's Telugu Desam Party, who pledged support to the BJP-led NDA after the 2024 elections. Despite securing 240 seats, the BJP is prepared to navigate coalition politics to address the challenges ahead.
