Tragic death of woman at Sonai, family suspects murder by in-laws

A heart-wrenching incident unfolded in Joydhanpur village, Sonai subdivision of Assam's Cachar district, as 22-year-old Tahera Begum was found dead, hanging from a tree in her in-laws' backyard. The incident, reported in the early hours of Thursday, has left the community in shock and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding her death.

The father of the deceased, Kamrul Islam Lashkar, recounted the distressing events leading up to Tahera Begum's demise. He revealed that on the previous evening, his daughter called him sobbing, expressing a desperate plea to be taken away from her in-laws' residence, citing a threat to her life. Despite the calls, Kamrul initially dismissed it as a domestic quarrel.

Tragically, Tahera's lifeless body was discovered hanging from a tree in the in-laws' house compound. The grief-stricken father lamented, "I could never imagine my daughter doing something like this. She was such a good girl. I should have listened to her." He expressed regret for not taking the earlier calls more seriously.

The victim, a mother of two, had been married for seven years. Her father suspects foul play and points fingers at her husband, Badrul Islam Lashkar, suggesting possible involvement in her death. The family accuses Badrul of killing Tahera Begum.

Local authorities, including the police and magistrate, responded to the scene promptly. The hanging body was retrieved and sent for post-mortem at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). The investigation is ongoing, with questions surrounding whether the incident was a pre-planned murder, as alleged by the victim's family, or a case of suicide.
