May 20: A tragic incident occurred on Sunday night in the Tractor Tilla area near Fulertal Bypass in Lakhipur, where three young men lost their lives due to suffocation while attempting to retrieve a dead chicken from a well.
The deceased were identified as Prosenjit Dev, Manojit Dev, and Amit Sen.
The incident began when a foul odor emanated from the well after a chicken fell and died inside.
Prosenjit Dev first descended into the well to remove the chicken but did not return. Concerned for his safety, Manojit Dev went in after him but also failed to emerge.
Amit Sen then entered the well to check on the other two but suffered the same fate.
As Amit Sen struggled inside the well, local residents gathered around. Ajay Sen bravely attempted a rescue but quickly exited due to the lack of oxygen. Another individual, Rajkumar Rikiyason, also tried but had to abandon his efforts. By then, the three young men had already succumbed to suffocation.
The incident caused an uproar in the area, prompting immediate notification of the Lakhipur police. Officer-in-Charge Kamlesh Singh and his team arrived swiftly, followed by the fire department.
The situation was assessed, and the Silchar SDRF team was summoned. Additional Superintendent of Police Subrata Sen, Lakhipur Circle Officer, DDM employees, and health department officials also reached the scene.
The SDRF team conducted a rescue operation that lasted about an hour, using oxygen cylinders to safely enter the well and retrieve the bodies.
The victims were transported to Silchar Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead. The presence of Police Superintendent Numal Mahato underscored the gravity of the situation.
