UP man sentenced to life for cutting open pregnant wife to determine baby's gender
Uttar Pradesh man used sickle to determine unborn baby's gender
A man from Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun has been sentenced to lifetime imprisonment for using a sickle to rip open the stomach of his 8-month pregnant wife, attempting to check whether the baby was a boy or a girl.
The incident occurred in September 2020 when Panna Lal, from Budaun’s Civil Lines, attacked his wife Anita.
The couple, married for 22 years with five daughters, frequently fought over the desire for a son.
Despite efforts from Anita's family to mediate, Panna Lal's obsession with having a boy led to violent threats and, ultimately, the brutal attack.
On the day of the incident, a fight escalated, resulting in Panna Lal using a sickle on Anita's stomach.
Anita, who was eight months pregnant, survived the attack but lost her baby boy. Her brother rescued her, and Panna Lal fled the scene.
He claimed in court that Anita had self-inflicted the wounds to frame him due to a property dispute with her brothers.
