Voter bribery unfolds in Chirang: Two detained in election scandal
Just before the third phase of the Lok Sabha election commenced, a disturbing case of voter bribery emerged in Chirang, Assam, shaking the integrity of the electoral process. The incident unfolded in Garubhasha under Sidli Police Station, where a man and a woman were caught red-handed distributing money to voters. Prompt intervention by vigilant members of the public led to the apprehension of the suspects by the police.
Authorities swiftly intervened, resulting in the detention of Florence Islari, a women’s cell leader of Chirang Block UPPL, and Vijay Mushahary, secretary of the village defence party. The police seized a significant sum of Rs 37,500 in cash and a motorcycle used in the illicit transactions, highlighting the severity of the situation.
The incident has sparked outrage, with Shuddh Basumatary, BPF central vice president, condemning UPPL's involvement and stressing the importance of upholding the sanctity of elections.
