Wedding called off in Cachar over as Bride's side alleges threatening of 'Divorce' and 'Dowry'; Groom's side demands compensation over false allegations
On December 15, a high-profile wedding took an unexpected turn, resulting in police intervention. The cancellation involved Arunima Dey, the niece of former Cachar District Congress President Pradip Dey, and her intended groom, Mrinmoy Sengupta.
According to Pradip Dey, the families connected through a matrimonial website, agreed on the match, and organized the wedding in a traditional manner. Trouble arose when the groom's family, from Dum Dum, Kolkata, allegedly pushed for an immediate ceremony upon reaching the Pailapool wedding hall in Silchar.
Dey described the situation, stating that an argument unfolded after the registry marriage when the groom's father questioned why he wasn't a witness. Tensions escalated with the mention of the word "divorce," leading Arunima Dey's family to call off the wedding due to the emotional distress.
Pradip Dey also claimed that the groom's family demanded a dowry of Rs 10 lakh, a detail included in the filed FIR. However, the timing and context of this dowry allegation remain unclear.
In response, Mrinmoy Sengupta refuted the allegations, asserting they are "false and baseless." He contended that the bride's family failed to organize the wedding as per schedule and later demanded compensation, resulting in a heated confrontation. Sengupta accused them of confining his family, issuing threats, and alleged abuse.
The situation escalated, involving the police, with Cachar SP Numal Mahatta stating that the charges pressed are bailable offenses. Both parties are advised to seek the court's intervention for further proceedings.
As the controversy unfolds, the conflicting narratives emphasize the need for a thorough investigation before reaching conclusions. This case serves as a reminder of the intricate nature of matrimonial disputes and underscores the importance of legal processes in resolving such matters.
