A tragic incident occurred today when the 13174 Down Agartala - Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express, which departed from Agartala on 16th June, was rear-ended by a goods train carrying containers between Rangapani and Chatterhat stations under the Katihar division of N.F. Railway.

The collision happened around 08:55 AM, approximately 10 km from New Jalpaiguri station.

Upon receiving the news, the Accident Relief Medical team, along with men and machinery, immediately proceeded to the location.

Senior officials from New Jalpaiguri and Katihar, along with General Manager of N.F. Railway Shri Chetan Kr. Shrivastava, rushed to the site from Maligaon. Railway Minister Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw also departed from Delhi to oversee the situation.

As a result of the collision, four coaches of the Kanchanjungha Express and five wagons of the container train derailed, blocking both the Up and Down lines. Tragically, eight people lost their lives and around 25 were injured. The injured are receiving medical treatment. The unaffected portion of the Kanchanjungha Express continued its journey after the incident. Passengers were provided with food packets and water bottles to ensure their comfort.

Helpline numbers have been issued and circulated at all major stations along the train's route to assist affected passengers and their families.

Due to the derailment, several trains have been canceled, affecting services at New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri Junction, Bagdogra, and Aluabari Road routes. The list of canceled trains includes:
