A farmer from Solapur in Maharashtra, India was shocked to discover that he had earned just Rs 2.49 ($0.03) in net profit from selling 512 kg of onions to a trader in the district. The farmer, 63-year-old Rajendra Chavan, had received a rate of Rs 100 per quintal for his produce, but after deducting charges for loading, transport, labour and other expenses, his net profit was just Rs 2.49. Chavan, who said that the quality of his onions was good, called for better prices for onion growers in the state, and for affected farmers to receive compensation. However, the trader said that the produce was of low grade and that Chavan had received good returns in the past from selling more than 400 bags of onions to him.
According to farmers leader Raju Shetti, the prices of onions have fallen due to a glut in the market and the short shelf life of the kharif produce currently hitting the market. Shetti called for the government to either buy the onions or provide subsidies to farmers, and criticized the inconsistent export and import policies regarding onions. The government's two permanent markets - Pakistan and Bangladesh - have reportedly preferred to buy onions from Iran due to the government's inconsistent policies, leaving Sri Lanka as the only viable market, but one that farmers are hesitant to send their produce to.
